Oral Loading of Phenobarbital to Achieve Therapeutic Effects in Pediatric Patients with Acute Repetitive Seizures

Purpose: Intravenous phenobarbital has not been available at our institution since 2019. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oral loading a dose 15 20 mg/kg achieve therapeutic serum levels and clinical seizure control in pediatric patients with acute repetitive seizures.Methods: is retrospective single-center review medical records admitted for seizures (from January 2019 June 2022) Philippine Children’s Medical Center who were given an level measurements taken within 48 hours after loading. Results: Eleven single mg/kg, while 14 two doses 10 12 apart. All 25 achieved post-loading. Higher seen (median, 19.8 μg/mL 24 vs. 24.4 hours). difference was statistically significant 5% (P=0.023), majority adequate without requiring additional anti-seizure medications (76%). Transient drowsiness most commonly documented adverse effect. Conclusion: Oral as or divided effective safe alternative may be promising useful intervention centers intravenous phenobarbital.
